These days we tend to be overstimulated and to spread ourselves thin. Many of us find it challenging to keep our balance in the face of the many daily demands and to remain focused on what we are doing at any one time; and this often brings about excessive mental and physical tension, and stress.

At the junction between Eastern and Western practices, the psychophysical method devised by the Australian FM Alexander (1869-1955) teaches us to change unhelpful modes of reaction by consciously coordinating mind and body at all times.

In order to reconnect with yourself you could start by taking a short break and ask yourself how you are tackling this particular gesture, movement, or activity: in a bit of rush, and by tightening or pulling yourself down unnecessarily? Or in an effortless, light, and expanding way?

And rather than trying to put any of it right, is there anything superfluous you could simply stop doing, here and now? It is, in fact, from this non-doing state that a field of possibilities can open up, beyond the constraining limits of our mental and physical habits, and that we can redirect mind and body towards more freedom and expansion.

Our presence of mind and body depends upon finding our centre, both mentally and physically. For our physical structure is also organized around the central relationship between the head, the spine, and the rest of the organism. When this central axis is weak or otherwise disturbed, the rest of the body must compensate in a number of ways. When it is solid we are able to reconnect with a flexible and dynamic verticality and act from a point of stability and balance, with the right amount of tension. Coming back to ourselves and learning how not to allow external and internal stimuli to unhinge us helps us to step back and respond more appropriately.

  1. Hello. This is Eric, and I have been taking Alexander lessons with
    Claire for several years now. I am very grateful to Claire for all
    the help and guidance she has given me to handle stress, to deal
    with frequent headaches (now practically gone) and even with my
    piano playing. I am however writing about something quite different
    today.
    I have recently taken up road cycling to raise money for Medecins
    sans Frontieres (more on that shortly) and I propose to post
    occasional 'Alexandrian' observations on how the technique helps me,
    at least, with the training. As I am shortly to ride 1,550km over
    nine days (from one end of Great Britain to the other), I am
    covering around 300km a week in training and have plenty of time
    to think about it. I should add that I have no qualifications in
    the subject, so these thoughts are simply a layman's random
    observations. The good news is that I will limit each entry to a
    maximum of 500 words.
    I think that the most immediate sensation, and one with which it is
    probably a good place to start, is the overwhelming concentration
    and focus that the sport necessitates. Perhaps despite appearances
    to the contrary, road cyclists are not out there to push themselves
    to the limit. Quite the reverse- it is all about minimising effort
    and saving energy for the long-haul. This means keeping a steady
    revolution of the pedals (about 80 per minute when you as old as I
    am), regardless of your speed or the gradient. So when you approach
    a hill, you shift down gears to keep at the same rate of 80rpm, just
    as you shift up when you come back to the flat. In practice this
    means that you are constantly scanning your body for tension or
    pain: loosening your grip on the handlebars, shifting your position
    slightly on the saddle, or lifting your head a little to release
    tension in your neck. All of these adjustments allow you to
    maintain a fluid and, hopefully, effortless momentum. This
    concentration is very similar to being 'in the flow'- you are totally
    focussed on the cycling and clear your mind of everything else. Of
    course you have to be alert to what's happening on the road, but,
    with time, your state of relaxed concentration allows you observe it
    objectively - no road rage here!
    Well that's probably enough to start with. There are many other
    aspects that I would like to cover and I will try to do so over the

  3. Hi. I'm Peter and I've been practising the Alexander Technique for more years than I care to admit. As I understand it, the Technique is a basis which can be applied to just about any activity. As such I've used it both to prepare for particular activities and to recover from the effects of over-exertion. Brilliant. Good luck, Eric!
